Caring for Pekingese Pups: Are You Up for the Challenge?

Caring for Pekingese pups can be a chore. If you are not up to the challenge, it may serve you better if you pick another breed. A Pekingese is a breed that requires a lot of attention.

The training alone needs round the clock presence of the master and this is not something you can do when you are gone from the house most of the time.

This breed is very popular but it is also very prone to disease and needs special care because its physical characteristics show bone deformities. Here we will be discussing ways on how you can care for your Pekingese puppy.

At the onset of your relationship, you need to establish to your toy Pekingese puppies that you are the master. You need to show dominance but you do not have to be aggressive or violent.

During the basic training and the battle for dominance, you need to show consistency and persistence. If you give up, the Pekingese puppy will know it and will exercise its own dominance over you and the entire household.

Once the dominance battle is over, toy Pekingese puppies will normally submit to what you want. In this case, be sure to groom your dog at least twice a week.

This breed has a thick coat and it is normal for its hair to tangle and develop mattes. Remove dead hair regularly and use a dog powder if necessary.

Clean its ears daily because it is very prone to ear mites. Use a Q-tip but do not use oil or other products that your veterinarian did not recommend. Clean your pet’s face with a moist towel to avoid developing fungal infections, especially around its eyes.

Pekingese pups have a bone deformity called brachycephalic syndrome. This is why they are small. The term brachy means small and cephalic means head. This is part of the Pekingese breed’s genetic make-up and you need to remember this all the time.

This genetic disorder can make it difficult for your dog to breathe and makes it very prone to other diseases and skeletal disorders. Exercise your Pekingese pups daily by taking them for a walk.

If you cannot take them out, at least play with them with balls or other dog toys.

Make sure that the dog is in an ideal temperature. The dog is known to suffer heatstroke if placed in places where the temperature is extremely high. Dogs are very warm blooded and they try to balance their temperature by panting.

The Pekingese is a little more sensitive than other dogs so you need to put them in rooms with normal temperature. Do not put them in your stockrooms or other rooms in which it is extremely hot.

Do not over feed your Pekingese. It is normal for Pekingese pups to show a hearty appetite and this might amuse you, thinking this is good for the dog.

It is difficult enough for the dog that it has bone disease so do not aggravate it with adding more weight than it can handle. Make sure that you feed it just enough but not to an extent that you are starving it.

Lastly, go to a veterinarian and have your dog checked. It is imperative that your dog gets all the vaccinations it needs. As mentioned earlier, this breed is prone to diseases and it is always wise to get a doctor’s advice.

There, now you know what it takes to take care of a Pekingese. Should you decide to buy one, you know what needs to be done and what you are getting into. Sure, the Pekingese is a great toy dog.

It is small, cuddly, playful, and lovely but it also entails great responsibility. It is sad that many Pekingese end in dog shelters because their owners got tired of them.

When you get a Pekingese, embrace the responsibility and you will see the happiness it can bring to you and your household.
