Pekingese Breeders: Your Guide to Becoming a Respectable One

Becoming a Pekingese breeder is not as easy as you think. If you are thinking of venturing into breeding dogs, particularly Pekingese, you need to be prepared on a lot of things.

Serious Pekingese breeders are difficult to find and if you want to become one, read on and learn what it takes to be a prime dog breeder so you can build a reputation with strong credibility.

Your Line

Becoming a good Pekingese breeder requires more than just your love for the dog. You need to have a strong background on Pekingese information because your buyers will ask you tons of questions and if you cannot answer these questions, you are likely to blow the deal off.

It is irresponsible to breed Pekingese puppies for the purpose of selling.

When you breed puppies, your main goal is to maintain the line so you need to know a lot of things about the Pekingese such as the health, temperament, origin, grooming requirements, housing, and so on.

The next thing you need to accomplish is to find reputable Pekingese breeders who can help you with your business. Most likely, you will be in partnership with these breeders because you share the same passion and interest.

Although, it may seem awkward at first because you will be competitors, developing a relationship with them will prove useful and beneficial in the long run.

After interviewing the selected breeder, you may now buy your first bitch and sire. If possible, buy the pair from the same breeder.

Start breeding the same lineage and then eventually, breed your own line as you master combining genes that will produce the best one.

Get as much Pekingese information from the breeder to find out if this is the kind of dog that you want to reproduce.

You need to ask several questions about the dog’s temperament and health such as its being prone to disease, life expectancy, and so on. Make sure that your pair was vaccinated.

Once you have your first litter, be prepared for the expenses. Good Pekingese breeders will not save on the cost of shots, vaccinations, food, and health care expenses.

Get the best veterinarian you can find who also cares about dog breeding. Make sure that the living environment is clean.

Your Attitude

As a good breeder, you are not going to sell your dogs to just about anyone who can lay cash on your table. You need to be responsible for the life of your dogs even if they have been sold.

A good breeder will not sell a puppy that has not been weaned. Ideally, you need to release the puppies only if they are at least 10 weeks old.

As one of the few decent Pekingese breeders, you need to do your part in investigating how your puppies will be treated after selling them. You need to ask the buyers of their intent for buying the dog.

You need to make sure that you only sell your puppies to responsible families. Ask about the living conditions of the puppies and check if the buyers are residing in a big house with a backyard or if they will just keep the dog in an apartment.

Ask them what they know about the Pekingese breed and if they have experience in grooming one.

Lastly, you are the only person who should breed your specific dog lineage or breed. This means that you will not sell puppies to buyers without neutering or spaying the puppy.

If you do not do this, your buyers are likely to breed your own line with other dog breeds or other Pekingese breeds. This will destroy your reputation in the long run.
